On The Move

Hello friends...
Time is just flying by right now. We have not had ANY Internet connection at our apartment for a few weeks now due to technical difficulties. We've been going to coffee shops and the library every couple of days. So just in case you were wondering where I went...I'm alive and well, just not connected. Luckily, we will be moving again in a week or so, and we have free high speed wireless at our new location.

They're moving again?! Yes. We have decided to cut our housing expenses in half and move to a much smaller place even closer to downtown. We've been busily painting, tearing flooring out, painting some more and sleeping hard. We've also had out of town guests and more out of town guests and dinner guests, so we have been B-U-S-Y!

You can see the "before" photos here and read more about the apartment. In the coming weeks, I will take the "after" photos and you can see the progress! We're having a blast making it our own and I am ecstatic to be moving into a smaller space again.

Some of you have asked how we stay on the Compact while moving and remodeling. Luckily, our landlords have said they will help with much of the costs of the renovations. We have been buying most of the remodeling items new (paint, tile, etc). If it was my own home and we were paying for it, I would probably buy used. It's proving very difficult to find some household items used...but we are doing our best and having a great time! The thing that helps me the most is to have PATIENCE. I am usually able to find what I need or something that will work if I just wait. eBay is my new friend. I'm learning a lot about my character in this process because I am definitely not naturally a patient person.

I have many new topics to write about and discuss with you...but my blogs will be on hold for just a bit longer while we finish the apartment, move, and get settled.

Blessings...and stay warm!

I can't wait to see what your going to post about! I was so excited when you popped up on my bloglines, I learn so much from you! I've been doing the oil face cleaning you blogged about and I love it! My skin looks so much healthier and I haven't broken out, which I was afraid of. Thanks for the great tips! I can't wait to see what the "partment" looks like when you're all finished!

Waiting seems to be a theme on a lot of blogs lately. I have noticed a lot of people simply waiting to find something used, or more "green" rather than rushing out to Walmart to get it now. I am amazed at the lack of patience in our culture...and I am guilty of it too! We pay stores a hefty environmental and financial cost to be open 24-7 and have immediate variety to fill our desires NOW. If we would only be more patient, we would save money AND the earth....I can't wait to see the pictures of your new place, even the before picture looks cute!

Good luck settling in! I loved the studio apartment I lived in when I was single, but I have to admit I'd never be able to downsize to that degree now with a family and my emotional attachment to the family home I inherited. I do admire your simple living, though!

Not much new here in Des Moines--Amy had a girl named Ashlynn, and Jessica from the API group had a boy named Cale. Erika's twins are cute!

Have you read Radical Simplicity, Sara? I think you might be Merkel's lost twin.

Seriously, it is a great book. Lifechanging for me. (Just for example, I'm spending time out of doors each day, in a secret spot in my back yard because of Merkel. This continues to be wildly refreshing.)

Hey Sara...I'm with you on the patience comment. We have been going through a lot of similar things with the downsizing and making life more simple. God has taught me so much through it. Good post.

Sara, I'm finally delurking myself. I have been reading your blog for several months now. It is so wonderful! I have since started buying organic food and body products for my whole family. That's not all of it, but we'll just say you have impacted me greatly. Especially you're relationship with Jesus.
In fact, if you remember, we ran into each other outside of Starbucks at Jordan Creek Mall in WDM, Ia. How funny, and such a small world. Blessings in your move and I pray protection for you and your family as you follow the path God has for you!

This is completely unrelated to this post, and I know that you are super busy, but I was hoping that one of these days you might post on "unschooling". I have a daughter about the age of Bella and I am now planning to homeschool/unschool her. I'm seeking advice everywhere, but you and I share similar philosophies about life, etc. Can you offer any anecdotes, advice? Thank you so much for all you have shared so far. I have learned so much from you already.

Thanks Laurie! What a neat article. It reminded me of one I read a few months ago in the Dec/Jan 2007 issue of Dwell magazine.

Wow. I just came across your blog. I have been thinking these same thoughts for so long and it's so refreshing to see someone else thinking and ACTING on them. I think that this is why so many unbelievers think of Christians as 'hypocritical' and 'stingy'. The pastor drives a BMW and his neighbor is going hungry. I think it's time for a change. I think that we are the generation to do it.
I look forward to reading more. Thank you!!!
